Several iOS apps now hold your social apps shut until you have read something from the Bible. They work in nearly the same way, and they differ in one place that matters: how much reading counts as enough.
How does a Bible app lock your phone?
It does not lock the phone. It uses Apple’s Screen Time framework to shield the particular apps you chose, and puts something to read in front of you when you try to open one. Calls, messages, and everything you did not choose stay open. You can switch it off in settings — this is a commitment you make, not a control someone else holds.
How much reading does it usually take?
About thirty seconds. Across most apps in this category the gate is a single verse, sometimes with a short prayer or a word puzzle, and then the apps open for the rest of the day. The reading is kept short on purpose, because in those apps the gate is the product.
What does First do differently?
First asks for a real reading and prices the day by it. A few verses opens half an hour; a chapter read slowly opens the rest of the day. The whole World English Bible is in the app, offline. First Pro adds a plan that walks through it in about a year. A longer window always costs more reading.
Is the reading the price of getting your apps back?
No, and First is built to keep it from turning into that. There are no streaks, no scores, and nothing anywhere that says you earned this. When the reading is done there are two choices, and neither is treated as the better one: leave the apps closed, or go on with your day. If the apps never open, the morning still happened.
Does it need an account?
No. First has no account, no server, and no analytics. Your readings, your marks, and your settings stay on the iPhone. There is nothing to sign in to and nothing held anywhere else.
Which apps can it shield?
